Bombing of Tokyo

The US begins a small strategic bombing campaign in Tokyo that holds large effects on morale. It is later called "firebombing." The style of Japanese housing made the use of incendiary bombs particularly devastating. In 1944, the bombing campaign became large scale and continued until the capitulation of Japan in 1945. |

9 August, 1945 The US bombs the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the only two attacks in war using nuclear weapons to date. The damage was devastating (90,000-166,00 in Hiroshima and 60,000-80,000 in Nagasaki) and emphasized the use of strategic bombing as a strategy and, consequently, the use of Total War. |
The Surrender of Japan
15 August, 1945
Japan announces its surrender to the Allies and on 2 September signs the Instrument of Surrender, ending World War II, marking a successful strategic bombing campaign. |
